In recent years — and especially since 7 October 2023 — there has been a sharp increase in both the number and severity of settler attacks against Palestinians. The incidents reported on this blog do not reflect all incidents of settler violence in the West Bank, but only those that B’Tselem was able to document and investigate.

In the evening, dozens of settlers arrived in cars at Masafer Yatta in the South Hebron Hills, and drove around the communities of Kh. a-Safai a-Tahta, Kh. a-Tuba and Maghayir al-‘Abid. The settlers shone lights into residents’ homes. At around 10:00 P.M., they arrived at one of the homes, attacked it with rocks and cut power cables. Community resident Nuzha ‘Awad, who lives on her own, stayed recently with relatives at the community of Khirbet a-Safai a-Foqa.

At 5:00 P.M., five armed settlers arrived at the community, one of them wearing a shirt bearing the Jewish National Fund (JNF) logo. They entered the home of Huda ‘Abd a-Rahman. When her 15-year-old son ‘Issa tried to record their actions, one of the settlers threatened him at gunpoint, ordering him to sit on the floor. The settlers ransacked the house, destroying kitchenware and cabinets, and ordered the family to leave their home. At 4:00 A.M., masked settlers returned, destroyed water pipes and stole the son’s cell phone and four animals from the family’s flock.

At around 10:00 A.M., Israeli settlers fired at a local resident who has an intellectual-developmental disability. He fled toward the community of Kh. Al-Fakhit. The settlers chased after him, searched the community, found him inside a home and beat him. About 40 minutes later, soldiers arrived, detained the man, found pepper spray on his person and claimed he was planning to attack the settlers. The man was not released until 10:00 P.M., after family members presented medical documents to clarify his disability. That same day, at around 3:00 P.M., soldiers known to the residents as settlers came into the community, entered the home of Huda Zein, had her and two members of her family sit out in the sun, and questioned them about firearms. When the women said they had no firearms, one of the soldiers threatened them at gunpoint. Then, some of the soldiers went inside, vandalized cabinets and ransacked the house for about two hours. They then left, threatening to return.
