The deliberate starvation of Gaza, which branches of the UN designated “the hungriest place on Earth” in May 2025, is one means of destruction Israel is using in the genocide it is committing in Gaza. With every passing day, the hunger in Gaza deepens and more people, including children, die from malnutrition. Yet Israel continues its attempts to suppress the reality of the hunger crisis in Gaza. This document presents Israel’s system of starvation in the Gaza Strip, which includes destroying food and means of food production, preventing food from entering, undermining existing aid systems and creating deadly conditions for obtaining food.

In 2024, several countries imposed sanctions on Levi.
For nearly two years, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza, acting in a systematic, deliberate way to destroy Palestinian society there through mass killing, causing serious bodily and mental harm and creating catastrophic conditions that prevent its continued existence in Gaza. Israel is openly promoting ethnic cleansing and the destruction of life-sustaining infrastructure for individuals and the group, with 2 million people starved, displaced, bombed and left by the world to die. The genocide must be stopped.
Israeli attacks since Oct. 2023 have caused more than 15,000 Gazans limb injuries, leading to more than 4,700 amputations, over 940 in children and about 370 in women. Doctors report amputations in inhumane conditions by untrained staff, at times without anesthesia, and proper rehabilitation is unavailable. B’Tselem spoke with parents and teens struggling to survive these conditions.

On Friday, 4 April 2025, around 1:00 A.M., military forces arrived in several military vehicles at the northern outskirts of the city of Jenin from the direction of the village of Jalameh. They stopped on Route 60 where it runs between the Kharruba and Sabah al-Kheir neighborhoods. Hussein Hardan, 43, and his son Hamzah, 14, noticed the approaching soldiers and managed to escape through the back door, fearing an arrest by the army, which currently almost always involves severe abuse. Israel’s regime of apartheid and occupation is inextricably bound up in human rights violations. B’Tselem strives to end this regime, as that is the only way forward to a future in which human rights, democracy, liberty and equality are ensured to all people, both Palestinian and Israeli, living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.
Since the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, Israel has acted in a coordinated and deliberate manner to destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip, committing genocide against its residents. In light of Israel’s actions in Gaza, the public statements made by Israeli decision-makers, and the international community’s failure to take effective action, there is a serious risk that the Israeli regime will expand the genocide to other areas under its control—first and foremost, the West Bank.
B’Tselem calls on the Israeli public and the international community to use every tool available under international law to bring an immediate end to Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.
