7.9.20 -8.9.20: A home, a building story and five businesses – two days of self-demolition in East Jerusalem
On Monday, 7 September 2020, a family of six from the neighborhood of a-Thawri (including four minors) was forced to demolish its own home.
In the Old City neighborhood of Bab al-Ghawanmeh, a family of 10 (including a minor) was forced to demolish the second story of a building where two of the family members lived. In Jabal a-Mukabber, a resident had to demolish five businesses he had rented, leaving eight families without a source of income.
The three demolitions continued the following day.
The Jerusalem Municipality goes out of its way to prevent Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem from building legally, as part of its attempt to drive them out of the city. Given no other choice, they build homes and businesses without a permit. When the municipality’s demolition order arrives, the residents are stuck between a rock and a hard place – pay the municipality tens of thousands of shekels to demolish their homes, or do it themselves to save the cost.
