Area C communities forcibly transferred under cover of Gaza war (Last updated: 17 July 2025)

Since October 2023, military attacks and violence by settlers and the military in the West Bank have led to the displacement of Palestinians on a scale not seen since Israel’s occupation of the West Bank in 1967. During this period, dozens of Palestinian communities – home to more than 2,000 people – have been forcibly displaced from their homes in Area C as a result of the violence. As of June 2025, thousands more residents of dozens of other Palestinian communities remain at real risk of expulsion due to daily settler attacks.

Palestinian communities in Area C have long been the target of Israeli authorities, but these efforts have intensified dramatically since October 2023. Backed by the state, settlers have established dozens of herding outposts around these communities in recent years. Their primary goal: to drive Palestinians off the land and seize as much territory as possible. The violence perpetrated by settlers living in these outposts has escalated sharply, reaching unprecedented levels during the months of Israel’s assault on Gaza. This terrifying daily routine includes severe physical assaults, settler incursions into communities and homes at all hours, arson, expulsion of shepherds from pastureland and farmers from their fields, killing and theft of livestock, destruction of crops, theft of equipment and personal belongings, and blocking of access roads.

In recent years — and especially since 7 October 2023 — there has been a sharp increase in both the number and severity of settler attacks against Palestinians. The incidents reported on this blog do not reflect all incidents of settler violence in the West Bank, but only those that B’Tselem was able to document and investigate.

On 11 March 2024, a new settlement outpost was set up about a kilometer away from the homes of a-Sukhun, a seasonal community where eight families, numbering a total of 54 people, including 30 minors, have spent the winter for decades. When the outpost was established, five families were at the community, after three families left earlier than usual in order to spend Ramadan elsewhere.Settlers living in the new outpost have been harassing shepherds from the community from the very first day, throwing stones at them and uttering threats, as well as cutting the water pipes connected to the community spring. The settlers have also blocked community members’ access to Route 515, which leads to the main traffic artery, Route 60. On top of this, since the outpost was established, soldiers have started coming to the community, walking around and even searching homes for firearms. During some of these searches, the soldiers kept members of the household out of their homes for hours and took their phones. On 21 March 2023, the five families that were in the community, numbering a total of 37 people, including 19 minors, were forced to take down their tents and sheepfolds and leave and move to other villages in the area, following harassment.

After midnight, settlers arrived at the community in about 15 cars along with several soldiers equipped with a bulldozer. Only some residents remain in the community this time of year to tend to the flock. The settlers attacked the residents, tied their hands, beat and humiliated them, injured one in the head and cracked another one’s ribs. They told the residents they had to leave the site and detained them for about an hour and a half before letting them go. The shepherds had to take their flock and leave, and then the settlers destroyed the 25 residential tents of the community’s 16 families. The residents tried to return the next morning to take the lambs they had left behind and discovered the military had set up a roadblock on the way to the community. The soldiers at the checkpoint refused to let them through.
