In recent years — and especially since 7 October 2023 — there has been a sharp increase in both the number and severity of settler attacks against Palestinians. The incidents reported on this blog do not reflect all incidents of settler violence in the West Bank, but only those that B’Tselem was able to document and investigate.

At around 8:30 A.M., eight shepherds from the community were grazing their flock on their private land, escorted by Israeli activists, when eight soldiers arrived in a jeep, including an officer known to residents as a settler from the area. They called out to the shepherds and activists and checked their ID cards. After about 10 minutes, another military jeep drove up and stop about 70 meters away from the pastureland. A soldier got out of the jeep and flew a drone over the flock. The goats scattered and the other soldiers chased them. When the shepherds tried to gather the frightened goats and lead them back to their pen, the soldiers started chasing them, too. The officer known to residents as a settler detained shepherd Yusef Hamamreh on the spot for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the other shepherds managed to lead the flock back into its pen, but the fright caused 11 goats to die and 37 to miscarry. Soon after, a soldier known to residents as a settler arrived and showed the shepherds a document declaring their pastureland a closed military zone for 30 days.
