In recent years — and especially since 7 October 2023 — there has been a sharp increase in both the number and severity of settler attacks against Palestinians. The incidents reported on this blog do not reflect all incidents of settler violence in the West Bank, but only those that B’Tselem was able to document and investigate.

Between 20 and 24 December 2023, a settler came five times to Khaled Abu Sharkh’s home in the community and repeatedly vandalized a water pipe and a water tank. The last time, on 24 December, Abu Sharkh was not home at the time. His neighbors saw the same settler arrive with two others, all three of them armed, and destroy part of a room he was fixing.

At about 7:30 P.M., seven settlers arrived at the community in a pickup truck, armed with firearms and clubs. While the residents hid in their homes, the settlers smashed the windows of two cars and of a tractor, drained a water tank, banged on the walls of homes with their clubs and threatened to harm the residents unless they left within 24 hours. The residents and activists who arrived called the police, yet no police officers arrived.

At 9:00 A.M., two settlers arrived in a car, one of them armed, and started driving after shepherds who were grazing their flocks by their homes, scaring the sheep back into their enclosures. They then parked the car. The armed settler went up to shepherd Tawfiq Za’arir, pointed a gun to his head and shouted at him, ordering him to get out within 24 hours. The two settlers then left. Za’arir called the Israel Police, who suggested he contact the DCO. That afternoon, at 3:00 P.M., two other settlers arrived at the community and set a dog on a flock of sheep. One of them pointed a gun at Za’arir’s head and ordered him to leave within 24 hours. The settler then threatened residents who were sitting in a nearby home.
