4 East Jerusalem families forced to demolish their homes within one week
On 3 Aug. 2020, two families from Silwan (10 people in total, including 5 minors) and a family from Jabal al-Mukkaber (7 people including 5 minors) were forced to demolish their homes. The next day, 4 Aug., a family from Beit Hanina (7 people including 4 minors) was also forced to demolish its home.
Israel does not view the Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem as human beings with equal rights and tries to drive them out of the city by permitting them almost no legal construction. When they build illegally, the authorities demolish their homes.
Many Palestinians demolish their own homes after receiving notice from the municipality, in order to avoid the municipal charge for the demolition, which amounts to tens of thousands of dollars.
