Jerusalem Municipality demolishes 3-story high residential building, Shu’fat Refugee Camp, East Jerusalem

At about 8:30 A.M. on the morning of Wednesday, 7 November 2018, Jerusalem Municipality personnel came with two bulldozers and a special Israel Police forces escort to the neighborhood of Ras Shihadeh in Shu’fat Refugee Camp, East Jerusalem. They demolished a 3-story residential building that was still vacant. The building, which had twelve apartments, was near the Separation Barrier.

The Jerusalem Municipality provides virtually no services to the neighborhoods that Israel cut off from the rest of East Jerusalem through the placement of the Separation Barrier. In keeping with barely providing any municipal services to these neighborhoods, and like its conduct elsewhere in East Jerusalem, the municipality deliberately avoids drafting plans for the Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, a perquisite for issuing of construction permits. It thereby compels Palestinian residents to build without permits. The Jerusalem Municipality shows up at Shu’fat Refugee Camp practically only when it serves narrow Israeli interests, as in this case, to demolish a structure built near the Separation Barrier.
