Since 1967 Israel has deported 1,522 Palestinians from the occupied territories. Out of this total number, 415 Palestinians were deported in December 1992. Deportations to locations abroad ceased after that date. As of August 2002, Israel has deported 32 Palestinians from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip under its policy of “assigned residence.” These latter deportations were carried out solely on the basis of administrative decisions. In other words, the deportees had neither a formal trial nor an opportunity to speak in their own defense. International law prohibits the expulsion of people in occupied territories, be it deportation to another country or forced relocation within the occupied territory.
