26.7.09: B'Tselem to National Infrastructures Minister: Wastewater knows no borders, set politics aside and treat the problem

On 8 July, the Knesset debated an agenda item proposed by MK Dov Henin following publication of B'Tselem's report Foul Play. According to the findings of the report, some 2.8 million persons live in Jerusalem and in the West Bank. The wastewater of two million of them - from settlements, from Jerusalem, and from Palestinian towns and village - is not treated. The ongoing neglect causes serious hazards throughout the West Bank and is liable to pollute the Mountain Aquifer., the most important Israel-Palestinian shared water source.

In his response to the proposal to the agenda, the National Infrastructures Minister, Uzi Landau, attacked the report's findings and vilified the organization itself. He did not, however, contradict the statistics provided in the report.

On 16 July, B'Tselem's executive director, Jessica Montell, wrote to Minister Landau relating specifically to the contentions he made before the Knesset plenum. Montell pointed out that as the Mountain Aquifer and wastewater know no borders, political wrangling over the report's findings is inappropriate. She called on the minister, whose responsibilities include wastewater treatment infrastructure, to rise above his views of B'Tselem and use the report's findings as a basis for preparing a work plan to solve the problem.
