Defense Ministry cancels prohibition on entry into Jordan Valley

Starting at the end of May 2007, Palestinians will not be forbidden to enter the Jordan Valley . In a letter sent to the Association for Civil Rights, the Defense Minister's Office stated that, following re-examination of the need for continuing restrictions on entry to the area, it was decided to allow every resident of the West Bank to enter the Jordan Valley , subject to security checks at various inspection points. The letter did not explain why the restrictions were imposed in the first place.

In February 2006, B'Tselem revealed that, in recent years, Israel has been restricting Palestinian entry into the eastern part of the West Bank , except for Palestinians who are registered as residents of the Valley, and for Palestinians holding special permits. B'Tselem's findings showed that severing the area from the rest of the West Bank gravely infringed the human rights of many Palestinians. The cabinet did not authorize the restrictions, nor was the public informed that such a policy existed.

The decision to cancel the restrictions on entry followed the request that the Association for Civil Rights made to the Defense Minister in December 2006. Despite the change in policy, the checkpoints at the entrance to the Jordan Valley will remain.
