Soldier fires volley of bullets at plasterer working on restoration of ancient palace, killing him, 14 December 2006 Mashur a-Dik , laborer
Two days ago [Thursday, 14 December], around 10:45 A.M., I was standing on scaffolding in the courtyard of Kafr a-Dik Palace , cleaning between the stones, when I heard shots from outside the palace. A group of soldiers entered the courtyard. Nabih Naji was standing in the courtyard and he spoke with them. I stood there, about twenty meters above the ground, scared to death. I couldn't move, I was so afraid the soldiers would shoot me. I saw the soldier who was speaking with Nabih quickly aim his rifle at Wahib, who was working in one of the rooms on the second floor. Wahib wanted to go out the door on the second floor. He was carrying two black pails. I heard him say, "Not me, not me." The soldier knelt, aimed his rifle at Wahib, and fired. Wahib dropped the pails, raised his hand to his chest, and collapsed on the edge of the stairs. He fell about five meters to the ground. I saw Muslah a-Dik, Wahib's father, standing in front of a door of one of the rooms on the eastern side of the palace. He began to scream. He told the soldiers, "Isn't it a waste, what you have done? You killed my son Wahib. He was working as a plasterer. What did he do to you?" At that moment, while the soldiers were busy with Wahib and his father, who was screaming, I took the opportunity and jumped off the scaffold onto the roof of the lower level of the palace and went immediately to notify Wahib's wife that the soldiers shot her husband.Mashur Muhammad Na'if a-Dik, 18, is a laborer, and a resident of Kafr a-Dik in Salfit District.
