24 Sept. '08: B'Tselem launches an office in the United States

B’Tselem launched its new U.S. office on September 24th at a reception on Capitol Hill, in Washington, D.C. With the opening of its U.S. offices, the organization expects to become the central clearinghouse for information about human rights conditions in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip for Member of Congress, the State Department and other policy makers. It will also undertake public education activities to raise awareness of these issues throughout the country, and particularly in the American Jewish community.

Recognizing the central role of the United States, B’Tselem hopes that its presence will inform the political and public discourse in this country and ensure that human rights are a centerpiece of the bilateral relationship and all diplomatic efforts.  The human reality on the ground is often absent from diplomatic discussions, which focus on the broader picture. Through providing accurate and credible information on human rights issues, B'Tselem will work to ensure that these discussions include consideration of human rights issues, such that the Israeli government will respect human rights, and uphold both moral and legal principles.
